Four Seasons Roasting Duck, Northbridge - Restaurant Review

Today, after my sons' swimming lessons at Beatty Park, we went to the most famous place for roasted duck in Perth for lunch. I found out about this place from someone's blog. The restaurant is situated in William Street, Northbridge. It was said that this restaurant has the nicest duck in Perth.
After trying it, personally, I don't think so. I prefer the roasted duck in Jade Restaurant, in Francis Street. The roasted duck in Jade Restaurant is crispier and juicier. I would recommend people to taste the roasted duck in Jade Restaurant - like the Four Seasons Roasting Duck, the Jade Restaurant has roasted duck and dim sum.

After the meal, I went round doing my weekly shopping at Wing Hong Butcher and Atlantic Seafoods Northbridge to get my meat and fish. Yes, the meat and salmon there are definitely much cheaper than Coles, Woolworth or Kailis but the places were so crowded with customers. I waited for quite a while to order and pay my choice of meat and fish. Sigh! I would prefer to do my shopping in Coles or Woolworth because I can shop at ease although it is more expensive. It is easier to find free parking too!

In the midst of the crowd, my family even lost me. We had to call each other later on the mobile phone to discover each other's whereabouts. I found a shop in Northbridge which sells Tiger Brand rice cookers and Thermo Pots. But they are really expensive! They were about A$300! I told myself that I should treasure my faithful Panasonic rice cooker, because good rice cookers are really expensive to buy in Perth.

Apples and Almond Tea Cake

Today the 10th May 2009 (Mother's day), I begin my quest to make an apple and almond tea cake. The cake was very easy to make. You will need

2 tablespoons of butter,

½ cup of sugar,

2 eggs,

½ cup of milk,

1 cup of flour,

1 ¼ teaspoons of baking powder,

a pinch of salt,

2 apples cut into small pieces, and

flaked almonds.

If you don't have apples, you can substitute them with raspberries. The start of my cake making turned out to be disastrous because I used 1 ½ cup of sugar and 1 ½ cup of milk, instead of a ½ cup of each! The whole mixture was so watery. I began to call out to my husband and telling him, "I wonder what happened to my cake!" Innocently without checking the recipe carefully, I told him what I put into the mixing bowl. Oh dear! Only then I realised that I have put too much milk and sugar. So, I had to pour everything away and start all over again.

Once you have everything ready, you cream the butter and sugar. Next you add the eggs and beat everything well. Later add milk, then sifted flour, baking powder, salt and apples - the apples need to be cut into small pieces. Then pour into a greased rectangular tin 28cm x 17cm lined with baking paper. Lastly scatter the almond flakes on top. Bake it for 30 minutes in a 200 degree Celsius (that's about 390 Fahrenheit) oven. Don't forget to preheat the oven first.

My apple and almond tea cake turned out delicious although it started of disastrously - so deliciously, in fact, that by the time my husband got the camera ready to take a photo for this blog, there were only crumbs left! My family members love it. It is moist and soft. So, the next time if your cake does not turn out well, you have to ask yourself whether you placed the right amount of each ingredients into the mixing bowl!

My Younger Son's Favourite Meal Time Show

Every time during my son's meal time he must have this show on - then he will sit down on his small blue chair and cheerfully finished his food. It was my dad who bought this DVD for my older son. After a few times watching it my younger son had claimed ownership of it. How wonder how he did it?

A Movie Abut A Valiant Bird

Valiant was produced by the same producer as the Shrek series. It is a computer animated comedy adventure of a brave but undersized (14.5 cm) pigeon named Valiant who has a mission to transport secret messages during World War II. He and his teammates have to avoid the Falcon, their enemy who will be trying to steal the secret messages and eat them. The comedy character was played most of the time by Bugsy who adored his flies and disliked showers.

Valiant had this dreams of serving in World War II. As he went after his dreams he met Victoria, the nursing dove. My son loves the part when the falcons Underlink and Cufflink played the yodeling music to torture their prisoner of war pigeon who is locked in a cage. My younger son will sing 'lo' 'lo' 'lo' 'lool' 'lool' even though his mouth his full with food.

He has watched the show soooo many times I can even memorize some of the lines. By now the DVD has a few scratches. I hope that the DVD will not end its life soon. Personally I like what Valiant says, that it is not the size of the wing span, it is the size of the spirit that counts. He also reminds me that I should not give up in any kind of struggles I am going through in life and I should have no fear because God is with me.

Blackmores Daycare Defence

Recently I bought the Blackmores Daycare Defense from Pharmacy Direct for my younger son who is 2 years and 8 months. I was hoping that it would boost his immune system. The supplement claims that it will "reduce the frequency and severity of colds and reduce the duration and frequency of diarrhoea."
Blackmores Daycare Defense also claims that it contains ingredients that will help support a normal healthy immune system, may help to reduce the number of days sick and assist with maintenance of intestinal flora after antibiotic use. I'd suggest to all parents who are having kids in day care and thinking of giving this supplement to your children, watch out!. Your child may not be able to tolerate this supplement.

I followed the instructions, which were written clearly on the box, saying that if the child is between 2 to 4 years old, all you need to do is to sprinkle 1 to 2 sachets a day on food - or you can also mix it with milk or juice. So what I did was sprinkle just 1 sachet a day on his food. Guess what happened? My son had diarrhoea for two days! I stopped the supplement and his stools immediately went back to normal.

Oh dear! Never believe all the attractive and enticing claims on kids' supplements in the market! There are so many of them in the pharmacy. I have learned a lesson from this event. As long as the child eats well and has a balanced diet, he should be fine.

So, since I have bought it, I decided to take it myself. I am about 15 times older than him. Therefore, the defense supplement was not powerful enough to invade my body system and I did not end up having diarrhoea. However, I had a stomach ache the next day! Now, I dare not try it at all...!

Teaching Malay Language Online

On the 22nd of February this year (2009), I got to teach Malay Language online to someone living in Miri, Sarawak, originally from New York. We do live in a very small world! I got this online job through a Language Direct School in Basel, Switzerland. You are able to learn about 40 languages from this school. They have all the qualified teachers online.

It was an interesting experience for me because I was never thought that there would be a day where I can teach from home without having to meet my students. Like in a normal classroom I still have a whiteboard, but it is an electronic whiteboard. All my teaching and conversation with the student are recorded in an mp3 file which my student can actually play back again and listen as many times as he wants.

After the lesson, I had to submit a student's evaluation and a lesson minutes for that particular lesson. My student was very eager to learn Malay since he is now staying in Malaysia with his wife. Unfortunately he did not make it for his second lesson although he had make an appointment on the 11th of March. I guess he was still on holiday in Philippines.

This job suits me because I get to pick the time I want to teach. On top of that I still have time with my kids at home. There is no travel to and from classes, for either me or the student. According to the school, I have another student for Malay Language but he or she has not booked any lessons yet. I hope that this online teaching works well in future and I get to work from home and spend time with my children.

ZOOB

My older son received a 125-piece zoob building set from his grandmother one birthday. Zoob consists of different pieces which can be joined together in many ways. You need to use your creativity to snap, click and pop them together to make models of dinosaurs, robots, cars, planes and so on. My sons love to make guns out of the zoob. Since I forbid them from having toy guns at home, they decided to make some themselves.

A 250 Piece Zoob Set

Kids can make simple models based on their imagination. For example a girl might make a necklace or bracelet from the zoob pieces. They come in five different colours which can snap together in twenty ways. It is suitable for kids 6 years and up, and the pieces are built quite solidly. So far my destructive kids have not broken any of the pieces. There are different kinds of zoob in the market. You can get building sets with fifteen pieces, forty pieces, seventy-five pieces, 125 pieces, 250 pieces, and even up to 500 pieces in one zoob building set!

Both of my boys love playing with zoob. It keeps them occupied during their leisure time. I prefer them to play with zoob rather than playing computer or X-box games. Zoob does require them to use their intelligence, imagination and creativity to build sometime great and fun!

My Aching Jaw (Part 3)

After one year my GP, Dr. Robinson, decided to refer me to a Orofacial Pain doctor, Dr. Robert Delcano, who works in the St. John of God Hospital, Subiaco Clinic. Dr. Delcano is intensely interested in temporomandibular (TMJ) disorders and orofacial pain. My first appointment with him was on the 26th of February, 2009. After seeing numerous dentists and doctors I really don't have the confidence that this doctor can help me. But my husband told just go and see him and see what he says.
So, I went. He could see from my facial expression that I frown a lot, and that is not good for me. It does stress up the facial muscles and cause more discomfort to my upper jaw muscle. I told him frowning and worrying is my habit, though I am trying very hard to get rid of it.

God said not to worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. For each day has enough trouble of its own (Matthew 6:34). I truly I can't stop worrying by my own strength - I need the grace of God to help me. The doctor did suggest that I should see a psychologist.

After examining me, he told me the good news that there is nothing wrong with my jaw. I really thank God for that. I thought I might need to go for an operation to fix up my jaw. He gave me some medicine to make me sleep well at night. He said I need sleep and not stress. Stress is indeed a silent killer in everybody's life.

Nowadays I try to meditate on Psalm 119 to relieve my stress and try to remind myself not to be anxious about anything, but in everything, prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present my requests to God. And the peace of God , which transcends all understanding, will guard my heart and my mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:6-7). What I really need now is to put all this knowledge into action, not leave it in my head as a head knowledge.

Dr. Delcano also suggested that I to make a new mouth guard which is more appropriate to the shape of my jaw. It cost me quite a lot. But at this moment what really matters is to be healed of the discomfort and to be able to eat normally and speak normally - money is secondary. Of course, I would like to thank God that he has provided us with all the money for the treatment.

On the 16th of March, I went back to see him to get my mouth guard fitted. This Australian-made mouth guard is definitely more comfortable to wear compared with the Malaysian-made one (it's also more expensive). The doctor and I hope that the second mouth guard will help to ease the problem of teeth-clenching once and for all. I have to wear the mouth guard as often as possible for about 6 to 12 months. This varies from one patient to another.

My Younger Son's Favourite Story Book

Recently my younger son has began to love his dinosaur book. He called the dinosaur a dog. I guess because the word dog has only one syllable and dinosaur has three syllables, making it a harder word to pronounce for a boy of his age (2 years).

My Son's Current Favourite Book

I bought the dinosaur book from a fundraising fair in my older son's primary school. It only cost me about $1. The title of the book is “Very Mixed-Up Dinosaurs”. In the book you can mix and match the head, body and tail of different dinosaurs, making brand-new dinosaurs like Spidotops, Diplocerasaurus, Paraplochus - and many other all new dinosaurs that any museum would be proud to put on display!

My younger son is also amazed by the beautifully coloured dinosaurs. The book is printed by
The Millbrook Press, Brookfield, Connecticut. The book was created and produced by Nicholas Harris, Jonna Turner and Claire Aston Orpheus Books Ltd. It was illustrated by Peter David Scott (Wildlife Art Agency).

It is definitely a good book to introduce our kids to the various kinds of dinosaurs that once existed. Some of them did really look cute and friendly. The book 16 real dinosaurs, meaning you can mix and match to make more than 4000 new and weird dinosaurs.

Now, every night my younger son will ask to have the book with him in place on his bed while he is sleeping. I guess in his dream he will be having his own adventures with dinosaurs

An Unexpected Meeting

On Sunday, we decided to get some take-away food from a Chinese restaurant in Subiaco. This shop is located along a quiet unpopulated small lane in Subiaco. I was too tired to cook after a trip to Mandurah to a gathering of almost all of husband's family. It was a good time of chatting and catching up with each other during the happy event - but also very tiring.
Back to the Chinese restaurant... After we collected our food from the shop, we got into our car, and all of a sudden I saw a Chinese man walking towards me, asking me whether I am from DUMC (Damansara Utama Methodist Church), Malaysia. Yes, when we lived in Malaysia, I went to this mega church, whose congragetion has a few thousand members. It is a good church where you get lots of trainning and in return there are lots of ministries which you can serve in to bless the community and most of all to bring people to know the Lord.

So, this Chinese guy asked me where he could find a place to eat. I did not introduce him to the Chinese restaurant I had just patronised because this was my first time there and I had not tasted the food yet. The food was still all packed in plastic containers. So, I asked what kind of food he would like to try - Vietnamese, Thai, Indian, or what? Then I suggested the Wembley International Food Court in Wembley which sells a wide variety of Asian and other food. We hopped in our car and led him (and his family) to the food court.

This guy was telling his wife that God is really good. God led him to meet me and now they have nice food to eat. He and his family is on holiday in Perth for one week. I suggested a few places he can visit in Perth, including the Zoo, the Bell Tower and so on. I hope that he and his family will have a blessed time in Perth. We do serve a great God who understands our needs better than we ourselves...

Aviation Heritage Museum Of Western Australia

On Labour Day (March 2nd, 2009) we brought our kids to visit the Aviation Heritage Museum in Bull Creek, Western Australia. They loved it. The museum is situated at the Air Force Memorial Estate on Bull Creek Drive, Bull Creek. The museum is open from Monday to Friday, from 10.00am to 4.00pm except on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Good Friday and New Years Day.

The mission of the museum is to "foster aviation in every possible way, in order to preserve [Australia's] proud aviation heritage. There are 28 aircraft, a viewing platform and a gift shop in the museum. No worries... parking is free.

My boys got a chance to go into a plane's cockpit and steer the steering wheel to move the rudder, flaps and ailerons as if the plane were actually in flight.. The plane has been modified and refurbished to allow children to enter into the plane. You can see a picture of them .

My husband was interested in reading about the hardships of the prisoners of war. These were aviators who were shot down over enemy territory and captured. There were variety of items on display, ranging from Red Cross parcels to the uniforms of their captors.

I was patricularly drawn to the Japanese display. These displays commemorate the Japanese attacks on Broome and Darwin during World War Two. I was able to see some of the equipment used by the Japanese and tactics they used.

My older son was amazed by the size of old torpedoes. “Wow! They are really huge,” he said. There is a elevated walkway in the north wing which allows a bird's view of the military aircraft such as the Supermarine Spitfire, de Havilland Tiger Moth, de Havilland Vampire and the magnificient Lancester. The Lancaster was used as a bomber command during World War Two.

Finally, before going back my two delighted sons bought a toy plane each. If you are interested to visit the Aviation Heritage Museum of Western Australia, here's a map to show you where it is :
